Position: Float Nurse/Counselor - Medecins San Frontieres – France (MSF-F).2008 – Till Date

Job Description (Nurse)

Observe patients (V/S, Pain Score, In / Out Balance, Drainage, General Condition, etc) and correctly fill in the patients file. Give Doctors relevant information on patient’s condition and evaluation. Check X-ray/lab test results (Hb, Blood Sugar, Paracheck, etc) and inform the Doctor as necessary. Administer medications (IV, IM, SC, PO, NG) correctly, and document on patients file. Insert IV catheter, Urinary catheter and NG tube as ordered by a Doctor.  Administer IV fluids at the appropriate rate and monitor to ensure that it respects the prescribed flow rate. Perform dressings with strict aseptic technique and report evolution of wounds to the Doctor. Remove sutures according to the protocols. Arrest haemorrhage. Assist patients ADL (toilet, transfer, meals, hygiene, communication, etc) as necessary. Prepare patients for OT (check list, consent, name tag, OT gown, marking of operation site, etc) and handover to OT. Ensure good understanding of treatment plans of patients. Give relevant, appropriate handover of patients between shifts and between units (when transferring patients to another ward). Teach and explain to relatives/caretakers any assistance required of them in patient management. Play active role in educating patients. Explain to discharge patients follow up schedule and any continued treatment at home if required. Provide a written nursing report at the end of each shift. Assist Doctors ward round. Administer oxygen if necessary. Suction patient’s airway if necessary. Administer blood transfusion and monitor the patients closely. Check Hb, blood sugar as necessary. Observe post operative patients closely. Immediately inform an anaesthetist of any changes of patient’s condition. Receive appropriate information from OT and handover the patients to a ward she/he meets the criteria for discharge from Recovery Room. Ensure adequate flow of patients for consultation. Organize and prepare patients documents for consultation.        

Job Description (Counselor)

Give profiling, counseling and psychological support to victims of rape (female, male and children). Accompany and assist the person through the medical examination. Counseling, if needed, about the possible consequences of rape, e.g. psychological effects, pregnancy, and sexually transmitted diseases. This includes counseling on any long-term risks and suggestions of support mechanisms available (in cases of HIV, etc). Ensure that confidentiality of patient is preserved within the hospital. Coordinate with nursing and medical staff for arrangement of surgical intervention when required for VSV. Provide necessary medical care (Vital sign, PEP. Immunization, etc) to the victims. Provide a systematic follow up support schedule for all VSV profiles. Assist in medical intervention as required. Provide counseling and support for patients’ as needed – amputees, victims of sexual violence and other patients as needed. Provide counseling and support for families of patients as needed e.g. families if patients with head and cord injuries, etc. support medical and hospital management in provision of care and discharge planning for patients without family or other support group. Heighten staff awareness and train them to integrate psychological support into general patient management. Provide ongoing and sensitization and training to hospital staff as appropriate regarding confidentiality issues, awareness of p[possible psychological support needs, etc. Help Counselor Supervisor to provide monthly statistical information and a monthly report of all counseling and VSV activities.
